Why have a Naming Ceremony?

A naming ceremony is an ancient tradition found in many cultures around the world.  It is a way of welcoming a new born into a family and introducing them to the wider family and community network.  Today the naming ceremony is also used to celebrate older children, such as adopted or step-children into a family.  The naming ceremony symbolically units and bonds a family together.  It allows parents, grandparents and godparents to publicly declare their  love and support for the child/children and to openly promise to do their best as a family in supporting the child's future development.

A naming ceremony can be celebrated by a child of any age.  It is not a religious baptism or a christening, it is an alternative formal celebration enabling a family to publicly declare their love and support for their child/ children.

What is involved in a Naming Ceremony?

A Naming Ceremony is designed to enable all family members who share a responsibility in caring and nurturing the child, including other siblings, to  celebrate the inclusion of a new family member.  Symbolic traditions such as reading a poem, singing a song or writing a declaration of personal commitment are encouraged.  Symbolic ceremonies such as releasing of butterflies, candle ceremonies and knot ceremonies all signify unity and support and can be included into the ceremony to make it unique and memorable.

Where can a Naming Ceremony be held?

A naming ceremony can be held in the home, in a park, botanical garden or by a beach.  Where ever you choose to celebrate you need to consider the time of the day, the weather, accessibility for all invited guests, health and safety issues especially if young children are invited, sound, seating and the general layout of the ceremony.

 What does it cost?

A meeting will be organised where together we can create the ceremony of your choice. A $50 non-refundable deposit will be required at the time of booking.  The general cost of the ceremony is dependant upon the complexity and length of the ceremony and distance of travel.  It is advisable to book as soon as you have chosen a date, time and venue.  Please consider having an alternative date and time prepared as well.
